Vynamic: Your Employees Should Be Your Best Recruiters

Vynamic is so successful in turning their employees into recruiters because they are intentionally and intensively investing in their employees’ experience with the firm. As Dan Calista says, “The absolute best thing that you can do for your recruiting is to exceed the expectations of your current team members.  Then, they become brand ambassadors, and that opens up an exponential number of opportunities to bring new people into the business.”

Vynamic is a fast-growing healthcare consulting company with offices in Philadelphia and Boston.  When I spoke with Dan Calista, Vynamic’s CEO, the company employed 107 people, with a goal of having 200 employees by 2020.  Their turnover rate is less than 2 percent, and in an industry that is male dominated, their team is 50/50 men and women.  They have a growth rate of 15 percent and are generating over $30 million a year in revenue.  In addition,70 percent of their new employees come from referrals of current employees.  That’s an astonishing number – how do they achieve it?

First, Vynamic pays a significant bonus for referring a new employee, a meaningful amount that they can afford given the billable hour model of consulting.

But there’s more to learn from the company than just paying significant referral bonuses.  More than the money, Vynamic is so successful in turning their employees into recruiters because they are intentionally and intensively investing in their employees’ experience with the firm. As Dan Calista says, “The absolute best thing that you can do for your recruiting is to exceed the expectations of your current team members.  Then, they become brand ambassadors, and that opens up an exponential number of opportunities to bring new people into the business.”

Dan wants people to have experiences at work that are so exciting and compelling that they have to talk about them to other people.  These experiences include their hands-on work with clients. They also include some of the best company-wide meetings ever run:  recent meetings involved piloting an airplane and running out on the Philadelphia Eagles football field behind the Vynamic flag, music blaring around the stadium. In myriad ways, Vynamic cultivates an employee experience that almost guarantees people will be talking about work in a great light with everyone they meet.

One of the best recruiting visuals of all time hangs on the wall in Vynamic’s headquarters. It is a wall-sized diagram that shows the “family tree” of the company. Current employees are posted along with the connection that drew them to Vynamic. As I say above, 70% of current employees were referred and recruited by another Vynamic employee. It visually reinforces that enthusiastic employees are the best recruiters your company will ever employ.

Vynamic’s recruiting strategy is simple, but it is by no means easy. First, we should financially reward employees who refer or attract other top people to our companies. Vynamic’s referral fee is rich but definitely justifiable. Let’s figure out what amount makes sense for us – an employee referral bonus is the cheapest recruiting fee you will ever pay.

Far harder is ensuring that our people are enthusiastic about our companies and have positive stories worth spreading about our businesses.  Dan Calista and Vynamic are exceptional in this regard. They are an encouragement to the rest of us that a concerted investment in our people pays off in a number of ways including recruiting. If our people can’t help but be enthusiastic about working for us, they will be both great brand ambassadors and the most effective recruiters ever employed by our organizations.
